I figured I should introduce myself to those that may not know me or at least give those that do know me, a better answer to the question ” Why are you doing this crazy thing?”
Hi! I’m Kelly. I’m 28 years old and currently living in Denver, CO. Born in California, grew up in Texas, college in Georgia and joined the work force in Michigan. The move to Colorado is happening as I type, so very new, but the outdoor enthusiast in me is excited to start exploring my new home state!
I’ve really enjoyed working as an environmental consultant the last 5 years and diving into the issues we face as residents of this planet, but even with all the states I’ve lived in and passion for my current work, I’ve noticed that for the last few years I seem to be longing for more. More adventure. More interactions. More challenges. More. More. More.
Growing up, the family vacations I remember most were the trips my parents took us to national parks. Over the years I’ve attempted to keep those trips going, however as many people experience, life just sort of got in the way. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still very happy with where I am currently at work and in life, but sometime this past summer, I got that nagging “more” feeling. I wanted more travel and experiences that make me face the edge of my comfort zone and dwindle in self-improvement/ reflection.
Last year I tried to make it back into the outdoors more and hiked through a few more of those national parks which helped me realize that being out in nature puts me in a state of peace. Hiking far and pushing up to that summit to look out across a vast landscape is something that just brings me happiness and in that moment I feel most at peace. Just me? Well besides that, I simply want to be able to look back on my life, only to find it full of “Wait, what?! Did I just do that?” moments. I’m sure at sometime in the near future I see myself settling down so it makes this moment, this next year, the best time to pursue an adventure I’ve wanted to do for a long time.
So, all that somewhat explains (hopefully) how I’ve come to this latest adventure. In late March 2018, I will be pursuing a Northbound solo thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail!
I think one of my favorite quotes I’ve seen when reading about the AT, best relates what I’m trying to say:
Between every two pines is a doorway to a new world. -John Muir
I’m ready to explore a new world! I can’t wait for this adventure, to say “yes” to a dream of mine, to meet fantastic fellow hikers, and to take on this next challenge.
I’ll keep in touch here, so you too can come along on this adventure!
